What does it mean to surrender to God or a higher power?

2 min read Answered by the Neighbor Radio team Neighbor review in progress Updated

Surrender means letting go of the need to control everything and trusting God with the outcome. Jesus prayed “not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). The word Islam itself means surrender or submission to God. Twelve-step recovery programs ask people to turn their will over to a higher power. Surrender is less like losing a fight and more like setting down a weight.

1 · MindWhat people believe, and how they know

Surrender isn’t proven by argument. It’s learned by experience, usually after control has failed, and trusted through the testimony of people we’ve watched it change.

What each tradition or community says

We're Christians, so we list what Christians believe first. Every other section is checked by someone from that faith or community.

Christianity

Jesus in Gethsemane asks for another way, then trusts the Father (Luke 22:42). Surrender here includes honesty about what you want.

Judaism

When God calls, Abraham, Moses and Isaiah answer “Hineni”, “Here I am” (Genesis 22:1). It’s availability more than defeat.

Islam

Islam comes from an Arabic root meaning submission and peace (s-l-m, the same root as salaam). A Muslim is one who surrenders to God.

Recovery and no religion

Twelve-step programs invite people to rely on a higher power as they understand it. Many non-religious people practice acceptance in a similar way.

2 · HeartWhat it feels like

“Surrender” can sound like defeat, or like being told to stop thinking. Most traditions mean something else: you stop pretending you’re the one holding up the sky.

For anxious or neurodivergent minds that scan for every possible problem, surrender can be practical relief. You still plan. You just stop treating every outcome as your job alone.

I tried to control everything for about forty years. Turns out I was the least qualified person for the job.Neighbor Radio

3 · HandsHow to be a good neighbor

Jesus didn’t fake calm before the cross. He asked if the cup could pass, sweated through it, and then said “not my will.” Surrender for Jesus came after honesty, not instead of it.

  2. Did they stop? Even when it was inconvenient?
  3. Did it cost them? Time, money, comfort, reputation?
  4. Did they treat the person like a person? Not like a label?

Try it on: something you’ve been white-knuckling all year. Who could you let help?
